Glossary

Terms commonly used in on-line Bridge (some come from chat rooms too):

  • glp = good luck partner
  • lol = laughed out loud
  • n1? = need one?
  • opp = opponent
  • pd = partner
  • spec = spectator
  • typ = thank you partner
  • wtf = what the f***?

For non-Bridge players here is an explanation of some of the terms used in the Talk pages

  • S, H, D, C = Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, or Clubs
  • NT = No Trumps i.e. the game is played without a trump suit. Fine if you can control all suits, can be disastrous if not.
  • Bid = an offer to play the game with trump suit (or NT) and contracting a number of tricks over a 6 minimum. e.g. 4H is a bid to make 10 tricks with hearts as trumps.
  • rdrury, smolen, ogust, transfer = conventions, which are fancy stuff where you bid one suit but actually mean another one (or two). One convention everyone knows is the Stayman convention.
  • IMPs = International Match Points, a method of scoring a game.
  • X = double, which means double the points if you get your tricks but double the penalty if you fail. However also sometimes used as a convention to ask partner to bid.
