Gosford Park (2001)
Set in a country house in 1932, where the wealthy and unpleasant owner William McCordle hosts a shooting party for friends and family, the film is ostensibly a murder mystery but the major theme that emerges is the relationship between masters and servants. The Bridge scene occurs after dinner in the evening and lasts a satisfactory 11 minutes and 20 seconds with cuts to other scenes. During this time the players are serenaded by fellow guest Ivor Novello at the piano, and also the murder takes place. Although we see players cutting for partners and later on holding their cards, there is no dialogue about the games nor do we see cards being played. Of interest though is the card-table covered in red baize instead of the traditional green. SummaryBridge relevance |
